LeTs-Care. Learning from long-Term Care practices for the European care strategy

The EU Care Strategy and the LeTs-Care Project

The EU Care Strategy

In 2023, the European Union introduced the ‘Care Strategy,’ urging member countries to work towards shared objectives for long-term care that is accessible, high-quality, fair, and sustainable. This strategy emphasizes the importance of quality working conditions within the care sector.

Long-term care refers to the support needed by individuals who cannot fully care for themselves for extended periods. This includes elderly individuals, as well as those with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Effective long-term care not only encompasses healthcare services but also a robust support network providing assistance with personal care, daily activities, companionship, and social integration.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant deficiencies and disparities in long-term care across the EU. Currently, northern European countries are leading in care quality, thanks to substantial public investments that align with the EU’s strategic goals.

The LeTs-Care Project

LeTs-Care is a pioneering comparative research project under the “Culture, Creativity, and Inclusive Society” sector of Horizon Europe. Launched on April 1, 2024, LeTs-Care aims to identify and analyze effective and replicable solutions in long-term care.

Led by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, this project brings together seven partners from Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Lithuania, Denmark, Portugal, Austria, and Belgium. By fostering international collaboration, LeTs-Care strives to enhance the quality and sustainability of long-term care across Europe, ensuring that best practices and innovative solutions can be shared and implemented widely.
